Old wrongs, new rights: South Africa after apartheid
The Gloucester Lyceum presents a slideshow and talk by Dan Connell.
Cosponsored by the Cape Ann Forum.
Dan Connell, who chairs the Cape Ann Forum, will show slides and talk about South Africa’s invigorating but unfinished journey from apartheid to democracy over the past two decades, starting with Nelson Mandela’s dramatic release from prison in 1990.
South Africa’s post-apartheid Constitution not only guarantees every citizen equality and full participation in the political process, but also rights to housing, health care, education, personal security, and a safe environment for future generations. What has been achieved? What has not? What — or who — holds back change, and why does so much remain to be done?
Connell has visited the country ten times since 1986 as an independent writer and researcher and as the leader of student groups from Simmons College (Boston) where he teaches journalism and African politics. His latest trip was in May-June 2011.
